Site Updates

NEW!

I've done a lot of housekeeping and revamped the site. This page is now for all updates, including new story updates. I've removed the Storyzone and replaced it with section headings which you can find on the home page and on the site map and I've added a featured story section. I've renamed a lot of folders so that might affect you if you have anything bookmarked.

May 31st, 2008

I was approached a few weeks ago by [info]jans_intentions, the moderator of an excellent LJ community about writing called [info]shared_wisdom. She  asked me to contribute an article for the community on writing BDSM. I was very happy to do so, and, after a lot of thought, and many revisions, I've posted the article today on the Community. Many thanks to [info]flyingnorth and [info]bluespirit_star for putting up with my needy requests to make sure it was okay, and to Jan for both asking me to write the article and checking it out before I posted.

Anyone who is interested can find the article here. I should stress that this is my own personal take on BDSM, after a lifelong interest in the topic, many years writing it and some real life experiences that I won't go into here...*ggg*.

I am really impressed by how sane, thoughtful and helpful this community is. There are some great topics covered on a regular basis by well informed writers - it's an excellent resource for the fanfic writer :-).

May 25th, 2008

It seems to have been ages since I last updated! First off, a big thank you for everyone who voted for me in the recent Stargate Awards 2007. I was thrilled when "Coming Home" won in the McKay/Sheppard romance category.

I've made a post about it here.

Secondly, we have a new translation of "Coming Home". This time it's in French!!! The first six chapters can be found on my Translations Page now. A big thank you to Sirrah for doing this - I'm always wildly impressed and very honoured when people email asking me if they can translate my stories into other languages.

March 25th, 2008

I feel I've been most remiss in not posting a link to these before as I do love to support kink-related things, especially as kink can sometimes get a bit of a bad press in fandom.

A brave soul has set up some awards just for SGA Kink which is a wonderful idea. It's so great to celebrate the good kinkiness out there!

Nominations opened quite some time ago and I'm not sure when they close so you might need to dash along there in order to make sure your favourites get nominated.

Here's the link!

http://community.livejournal.com/sga_kink_awards

And a big thanks to organisers - it's a lot of hard work running some awards so it's great that they are taking it on!

February 29th, 2008

I've updated the translation page with two new Chinese translations of my stories - Abducted, and Lies, by kind courtesy of
yinhzhiyan.

I was also really heartened by this post from Seperis about my fic "Coming Home": http://seperis.livejournal.com/571561.html?format=light. I'm posting the link here because I've spoken here about some of the problems I had in the SGA fandom as a result of that story so I thought I should share the good stuff too!

February 9th, 2008

Wow, I think this is the longest I've gone between updates ever. Lots of things happened to me starting around Oct 2006 and continuing through last year and into this. I must admit I feel less connected to fandom after what went on in SGA - I've only managed one story since then (the Dr Who one, "New Gallifrey") which is the least I've written in about 10 years.

Anyway, no new story because I'm still not writing. However, I have been nominated for some Stargate awards.

"Coming Home" is in Romance, and "Disappointing Yoda" is in Episode Based.

It’s quite satisfying to see "Coming Home" nominated as it’s the story the SGA Big Name Fans all got their knickers in a twist about, with a kind of bonkers and yet deeply nasty hysteria that made me reassess my involvement in fandom.

Voting goes on until 3rd March so plenty of time to vote for your favourites.

September 4th, 2007

Yay! I've written something! My first story since November, and, much to my surprise, it's Doctor Who - Doctor/Master slash to be precise, and very angsty it is too. Details below :-). It felt really good to be writing again - I really enjoyed the writing experience.

New Gallifrey
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/Master
Rating: R
Summary: His captivity is one of sea breezes and walks across silver sands, and he is at liberty to wander the TARDIS, room to room, whenever he wants, but that doesn’t make his imprisonment any the less complete.
Wordcount: 7000
Keywords: Angst. Lots of it.
Spoilers: "The Last of the Time Lords"

August 12th, 2007

I'm so pleased to have won some awards in the recent Titanium Whip BDSM awards. A big thanks to the organisers of the awards. I liked the fact that a) these were for BDSM stories - the first online fandom awards I've heard of to recognise BDSM in its own right. And b) they were voted for by a panel, and all the stories were anonymous - this meant that a variety of stories, across many different fandoms were recognised. It must have been hard work for the judging panel but well worth the effort.

You can see which of my stories won on my awards page. I was particularly thrilled with the "best spanking scene" award. Why not try and guess which spanking scene out of all the spanking scenes in all the stories I've written won that one... *g*.

June 24th, 2007

Sorry I've been quiet of late. I'd like to say I've been writing but I haven't written anything since last November. My confidence/mojo/muse/whatever was shattered by what happened and hasn't been with me since.

I am pleased to announce that "Coming Home" is now available in zine form. I haven't seen it yet but people have emailed me who have seen it and they say it looks great. There's a cover illo by the talented Bluespirit. You can buy it from: http://www.agentwithstyle.com/ - and please remember that I don't make any financial gain from my stories being published in zine form.

I've updated the Translations Page with parts 5 and 6 of the Chinese translation of Coming Home, kindly translated by Izum.

April 11th, 2007

Translations Page updated with part 4 of the Chinese translation of Coming Home, kindly translated by Izum.

February 18th, 2007

Translations
After over a year of hard work, Manuela has finished her translation of 24/7 into German. I'm delighted to be posting the final chapter today. She's also translated General & Doctor Sheppard. I am in awe of her talent and dedication - 24/7 is an enormous series to tackle but she never gave up - and General & Doctor Sheppard is a pretty long story as well! Someone give that girl a stiff drink!

I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all the people who have, over the years, done such fine translations of my work. I feel really honoured that so many of my stories have been translated into different languages - it wasn't something I anticipated when I started writing fanfic. I have no talent for other languages myself and I have such admiration for the people who are skilled enough in another language to be able to translate, and dedicated enough to give so much time to the task.

Currently various of my fics are available in German, Chinese, Spanish and Italian and I can't tell you what a thrill it is, as a fanfic author, to know that my stories are accessible in so many different languages. I've loved getting a little glimpse into other cultures via my conversations with the various translators.

I was especially surprised and pleased by the interest in my stories in China. A couple of years ago my Chinese readers invited me to a webchat with them which was a wonderful experience - they shared pictures they had made, and their experiences as readers, and I've loved seeing so many of my stories being translated into Chinese.

You can find the translations on the Translations Page

Awards
Many thanks to those who voted for me in the McShep awards. I received runner up awards for Coming Home and Back from the Well.

And thanks also to those who nominated me in the Titanium Whip awards. That's very kind of you :-).

December 19th, 2006

Many thanks to you for all your kind messages of support following my post on Dec 12th. They've been much appreciated. I'm still not entirely sure where to go next but I do have a more robust attitude about what's happened. I have my own private opinions on some of the more well known names in the SGA fandom and how they've behaved but I can't see the point in raking up yet more wank by responding to the whole hoo-hah. I do think it's ironic that a fairly lightweight adventure show like SGA has attracted people who view fandom from a position of such high intellectual snobbery. I think they just like the sound of their own meta.

Moving on:

I've posted Chapter 25 of the German translation of 24/7 on the Translations Page. The translation is by Manuela. One more to go! She deserves a medal :-).

Voting closes on December 21st for the McShep awards. You don't need to have an LJ in order to vote. Here is the organiser's email text:

"Just a reminder that there are only THREE days left to vote in the McShep Awards! ( http://community.livejournal.com/mcshep_awards/tag/voting+poll )

You DO NOT need a livejournal to take part in these awards.

There are three ways to vote.

-Go to the comm and vote in the poll if you have a livejournal (you'll be able to see the results, but you won't be able to see who voted for which work).

-Leave a comment on each of the voting posts--all comments are screened.

-Email me at mckay.sheppard.awards@gmail.com with the appropriate category and your vote.

(Which means that the final results of the polls are not 100% accurate--the winners will be decided by the adding of all three voting options together).

There are 27 categories to vote in. You do not have to vote in every poll, you can vote in whichever categories you choose.

You're free to change your vote, if using the polls, at any time between now and the 21st of December.

December 21st is the LAST day to vote.

Winners will be announced within a few days of the polls closing.

Thank to everyone who has taken part!"

December 12th, 2006

Quite a long update - bear with me :-).

I've been the focus of some Livejournal attacks in recent weeks. A vocal section of the SGA fandom has a problem with my two John/Rodney epics, General & Dr Sheppard and Coming Home. I don't mind people not liking my stories but the hostility of these comments went way beyond that. Some of it was because of the BDSM content (sigh) and some the romantic nature of the stories, and dislike of my prose style. Some of it just seemed to be pure hostility towards me, with some quite personal comments - from people who I've never spoken to. This isn't the first time I've been targeted since posting in the SGA fandom. I'm feeling very bruised and down right now, and not entirely sure where to go from here.

On with the update:

I've posted Chapter 24 of the German translation of 24/7 on the Translations Page. The translation is by Manuela and she's done a cracking job translating so much of this extremely long fic. I'm full of admiration for her.

Now, onto two very different sets of awards. I feel like I'm always telling you about more awards so I'm sorry about that.

Voting opened recently in the McShep Awards - these are just for John/Rodney fics. I'm delighted to have several of my McShep stories up in various categories. I'm particularly pleased to see General & Dr Sheppard and Coming Home nominated in the Best Story category (as well as in the romance and AU sections) as these stories have been given such a hard time lately.

I'd like to say thank you to those people who nominated me for these - that's very kind of you and much appreciated. A big thanks also to Forcryinoutloud for her hard work in organising and running the awards.

I was delighted to see so many of my personal favourites nominated - people like Likethekoschka, Chaps1870, Jo-zed-pee-em, Bluespirit, Diana Williams, Jane Elliott, Porthos, Lillyjk, Lavvyan, Artconserv, Yosimite and many other fabulous writers/artists/vidders. It's great also to see categories for manipping, artwork and vidding.

The following of my stories have been nominated:

In the AU category, Coming Home
In the Romance category, General & Doctor Sheppard
In the PWP category,  Home and Shrine
In the Episode Tag category, Disappointing Yoda
In the Threesomes/Moresomes category, Back from the Well
In the Drama category, The Chair
In the Best Story category, Coming Home and General & Doctor Sheppard

I was also particularly honoured to be nominated in the Best Author category. Voting closes on December 21st.

In addition, nominations are open for the Titanium Whip Awards. These are multi-fandom BDSM awards which is fabulous as it gives BDSM a kind of legitimacy that I feel is often lacking in the slash world, as my recent experiences with G&DS and Coming Home have shown. I'm sure that many of the people visiting my website are connoisseurs of all kinds of BDSM stories in many different fandoms and I do hope you'll take the time to nominate your favourite authors for these awards. I'm not just talking about me here!!! I'd love it if you nominated the best of the best that you've read in your fanfic travels, and make these awards the spanky success they deserve to be :-). Nominations close on December 31st.

December 2nd, 2006

I've updated the Awards page and the individual story pages with the awards banners from the Stargate Awards. Thanks again to everyone who voted for me in these awards. I was extremely thrilled to win in these three categories.

November 16th, 2006

I've posted Chapter 23 of the German translation of 24/7 on the Translations Page. Translation by Manuela.

I've also posted a note on a fic I posted a few years ago, Stepping out of the Shadow, making the timeline of writing it clear, and directing people to a birthday story, Alone in the Dark, written for me by Dafna Greer which was written *before* my story.

November 3rd, 2006

First off, a big thank you to everyone who voted for me in the Stargate Awards. I won three! Yay! I'm really thrilled as I'm new to the fandom. Back from the Well won in the multiples/hurt-comfort category, Doctor's Orders won in the slash/best kink/other category and Queen won in the ship/best drama story/Sheppard-Teyla category. Congratulations to the other winners too - and a big thank you to the award organisers as this was a huge undertaking.

Secondly, I'm posting a new story. I'm not sure where this came from and it features a rather dark Rodney. Details below!

Disappointing Yoda
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Summary: "When you'd only loved three living things in your entire life, you had to take care of them as best you could..."
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: "Common Ground"
Wordcount: Around 2,800

October 21st, 2006

I've updated the site with Chapter 22 of 24/7 in German. You can find it on the Translations page.

October 8th, 2006

I've posted a complete version of Coming Home all in one file for those who like to read that way. It's very big though! You can find it here.

September 20th, 2006

I've posted the final chapters of Coming Home. Sorry for the delays in posting - I've read through this fic several times but I found that when I came to post I wanted to read through each chapter again beforehand, so that all took up far more time than I'd anticipated. Plus posting itself just seemed to take ages, with all the formatting and copying of links and so forth on LJ and here. Replying to the feedback took time - but that was a very pleasant chore so I'm not complaining! But all in all events conspired against me and I wasn't able to get the full fic up here as early as I'd have liked. Never mind! Maybe next time! I hope you enjoy the final parts of the story - and I always like receiving friendly feedback <g>

'Translations page - chapters 20 and 21 of 24/7, translated into German by Manuela

September 3rd, 2006

I have now finished Coming Home, the prequel to General & Dr Sheppard. It's basically what I've been writing for the past several months and is around 183,000 words long - which is why I haven't had anything to post since April!

Coming Home is still in the editing stage. I'm hoping to start posting it in instalments to my Livejournal on Monday Sept 11 and to my website soon after that.

Coming Home is set in a BDSM universe where most people are bisexual and identify as dominant, submissive or switch. It’s about two people finding each other unexpectedly, and then learning how to be together.

Below is an extract:

“His face was now angled, unintentionally, in John's direction and John watched as Rodney slowly closed his eyes and then opened them again, and then he lay there, and there was an expression in his eyes of such sad acceptance that John's breath caught in his throat. Suddenly this had gone beyond duty for John, beyond his faintly bored witnessing of an unpleasant man getting his due. The expression in Rodney's eyes seemed to say, "Right. Yes. Of course. Here we go again." And rather than looking like the brusque, sarcastic scientist John thought he knew, now he resembled nothing so much as a lost, forlorn puppy, friendless and without a home. That realisation took John totally by surprise and now his interest in the proceedings was no longer dispassionate. Now it felt personal.”

August 15th, 2006

I'm delighted that ten of my stories have been nominated in the Stargate Awards.

General & Doctor Sheppard has been nominated in the slash/best drama category
Back from the Well has been nominated in the multiples/hurt-comfort category
Doctor's Orders has been nominated in the slash/best kink/other category
The Chair has been nominated in the slash/best romantic story/Sheppard-McKay category
Breaking the Rules has been nominated in the slash/best romantic story/other category
Home has been nominated in the slash/short works/vignette
Shrine has been nominated in the slash/best pwp category
Rodney McScrooge has been nominated in the slash/best humour category
Bad Day has been nominated in the slash/missing scene category
Queen has been nominated in the ship/best drama story/Sheppard-Teyla category.

I don't think that all my SGA stories are major works by any manner of means but there are a few that I'm particularly proud of and hope that they do well. I'm really delighted that stories by some of my favourite authors are nominated too. Authors such as Mice, Chaps, Likethekoschka and many others. And my good friend and beta, Bluespirit, has both her excellent stories *and* her fantastic artwork nominated, like the talented little bunny she is :-).

I really do think these are the best organised awards I've seen. They had some good rules which reduced some of the problems with online fandom awards. Also, all the stories are in a database which makes voting easy. You do have to login to register your vote which should also help eliminate any cheating. Writers are only allowed one story per category which is a good idea and promotes a wider diversity of fic. There are also categories for music vids and artwork - both of which I love so I'm happy to see them there. I love the way awards create links to some of the best stories/artwork/music vids out there - it's a great resource. Voting continues until 24th September so there's plenty of time to read the nominated stories which is also good :-).

There are also some strict voting rules which should be followed, and which can be found here: http://www.sg1-awards.com/eFic/stuffing.php

Finally, I always like to thank award organisers. They do a really time consuming job and provide a great buzz for the fandom so thank you :-)

August 6th, 2006

I feel bad because I haven't been able to post a new story since April :-(. And this whole time I've been writing away but have nothing to show for myself! The GADS prequel, Coming Home is now 142,000 words long. AGH! And still not finished! It's going to be extremely huge by the time it's done. However - it IS nearly there. I anticipate finishing the writing within the next two weeks and then I'll need to do a read edit and my beta will need to look at it so I reckon I should end up posting it early in September, if not before. I'm really pleased with how it's turned out - it's so much fun playing in this universe :-).

I'm posting a link to a translation of Worlds Child into Chinese by Wen Qing and Ellen Zak. I'm so impressed by their dedication in translating such a long work. Along with Manuela, who is doing the German translation of 24/7 - these people totally rock! You can find the link to World's Child on the translations page

July 14th, 2006

Just a little note to say that a zine version of General and Doctor Sheppard is now available from Mysti at: http://www.agentwithstyle.com/ And just a reminder that I don't make any financial gain from my stories being published in zine form!

July 10th, 2006

I'm STILL working on the GADS prequel. It does have a name now - "Coming Home" and it's set entirely in the AU where the married John and Rodney came from. It's the story of how that John and Rodney got together in their BDSM universe. I'm having some fun with it but I've been busy these past few weeks so haven't had much writing time. It's about 96,000 words long so far so it'll be a monster big story when it does finally arrive.

I've updated the site with Chapter 19 of 24/7 in German, and a Chinese translation of Deja Vu. You can find them on the Translations page.

June 11, 2006

I'm delighted that all my SGA fics have been nominated for the SGA Awards! I wasn't expecting that all of them would be nominated so thank you very much if you nominated me! I'm trying to decide which ones to put in which categories now - not an easy choice.

I'm still busy writing the General and Dr Sheppard prequel. It's enormously long so hopefully it'll be worth the wait :-). I feel like I'm writing all the time but don't have anything to post to show for it!

I've updated the site with Chapter 18 of 24/7 in German, and a Chinese translation of Skeletons. You can find them on the Translations page.

June 3rd, 2006

I'm currently working on a prequel to my story General & Dr Sheppard so I thought now would be a good time to feature G&DS on my featured story page. Go read!

May 29th, 2006

I'm delighted to announce that a zine of my story, Back from the Well, is now available from Agent with Style at http://www.agentwithstyle.com/. Click on the link to Stargate Atlantis and you'll see it listed.

Mysti is currently also zineing General & Dr Sheppard, and a selection of my other SGA stories in an anthology taking its name from my fic Breaking the Rules. I'll let you know when these are available.

May 20th, 2006

I'm busy working on a prequel to General & Doctor Sheppard. The prequel deals with how AU John and Rodney got together so it's set entirely in the fabby and rather bonkers BDSM universe! It's about 50,000 words long and nobody has so much as kissed yet so it's going to be another long one. That explains, incidentally, why I'm being quiet at the moment - I'm busy writing another epic! I'm also being haunted by a dozen other SGA plot bunnies. Is it wrong to spend so much time thinking about the bad things Kolya might do to Rodney if he had him locked up and at his mercy? <g> No, I didn't think so...

Translations Page: I've just posted Chapter 17 of Manuela's amazing German translation of 24/7. Manuela really is phenomenal the way she's translating this entire story - it's SO long! I know that her German audience really appreciate it though and so do I :-)

April 30th, 2006

Today is the last day of nominations for the SGA fanfic awards if you still haven't nominated.

I'm currently working on the sequel to The General & Dr Sheppard - or at least it's more of a prequel as it deals with how AU John and Rodney originally got together in their bonkers BDSM universe. I'm having some fun with it but needless to say it's going to end up long. I think it's already around 25,000 words and nobody has even kissed yet.

And, finally, I'm posting a Mulder/Skinner story!!! I actually wrote this awhile ago for the Requited zine but forgot to put it up here once the time limit passed. So here it is. It's only short!

Abducted
Summary: Mulder's been abducted. Kind of.
Pairing: Skinner/Mulder
Rating: R
Wordcount: 1,922

April 22, 2006

Queen
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: Teyla/John
