I haven’t really seen that many musicals live but I’ve really enjoyed the ones I’ve seen
Not sure I can narrow down to a favourite :-
Joseph was the first musical I actually saw in a theatre. I went on a school trip and I loved it. I go to see it everytime it comes to the city I live in now. I love the movie of Oliver! and I saw a performance in London last year with Griff Rhys Jones as Fagin. These two are all mixed up with happy childhood memories for me and I have special fondness for them.
I love The Sound of Music to the point of torturing my family. I used to sing it so often round the house when I was little that my older brother cracked and bought me some musicals on tape in hopes I turn my attention to something else! That started my Phantom of the Opera obsession. I listened to that tape (original London cast) over and over… I could never understand how Christine could choose Raoul over Phantom *sigh*
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is fun – that child catcher gave me nightmares! And I really really wanted a musical box with moving people who would sing for me.
I have watched the Buffy musical episode countless times. I was iffy before they did it and then I watched it and it was just awesome.
I also love (takes deep breath…) Hairspray, Mamma Mia, West Side Story *sob*, Fiddler on the Roof…
And my guilty pleasure is Sweeney Todd. I love the songs, the score and yes, the melodramatic bloodshed!
I’ve never seen Les Mis but I’m thinking I probably should try to soon.
OMG how can I forget Fiddler, Hairspray and Mamma Mia?! LOVE them all. The movie version of Mamma Mia is another one of my favourite movies of all time – it’s impossible to watch that movie and stay sad *g*. And Fiddler on the Roof has some utter CLASSICS in it – it was one of my all time faves growing up and still is. And Hairspray is so gorgeous and inspiring.
I was never a great fan of West Side Story for some reason – no idea why. I adore Joseph though – I went through a phase as a kid of listening to it non stop for hours – I love it.
Oh and that brings me onto Jesus Christ, Superstar, which is also a truly great musical. Another one I listened to over and over again as a kid – such an amazing piece of work.
Ooh, I’m loving this topic! Thanks to the OP for starting it
