He is just gorgeous! There is something about him – when he first came onscreen as Jefferson in OUAT, I was all ‘who is THAT?!” and I watched Political Animals because I thought the gay ‘first son’ in the White House was such an awesome idea, and he was so fantastic in the role. I have no idea why that didn’t get a 2nd season as I thought it was excellent. He’s really got ‘something’ – I had been busy muttering about him and posting pics of him for ages and nobody seemed to know who he was, and the TWS came along and he was *everywhere* so I was spoilt for choice with pics. I love it because there seem to be photos to illustrate every scene Alex is in Slavecatcher *g*, so it’s easy to visualise! In my fantasy, SC will get made into a TV show, with him and Daniel Craig playing the leads *ggg*. A girl can dream!

I wish him a long and successful career – it’s lovely to follow him in what he’s doing. Did you see him in Law and Order? He was so young and not at all the sex god he grows into later! LOL!

Yay! Glad the answer was satisfying! And yes! I think for me one of the main appeals is in creating a futuristic society that is very like our own but with a particular set of problems for which it has created a particular set of solutions – they seemed logical at the time but 80 years later they have evolved and the cracks are showing. I don’t think this story really fits the ‘slavefic’ niche although it has elements of it. It’s also a murder/mystery, and a romance, and a sci-fi novel, so it’s juggling a lot of different genres!

And yes re the forum – it went down for a couple of days and we had to get it back up – very annoying! But it’s working again now so yay! LOL!

Heh – trust you to Think Dark Thoughts *g*.  I had my own fantasy which was that Alexander Pierce was using poor Bucky as his own personal fuck toy for years on end, but then Steve finds him, and coaxes him in like a stray cat, and restores him to his former self with lots of love and kindness!

    Good question!

I should make it clear from the outset, that I write BDSM as loving and consensual – anything else is non-con/torture/rape/abuse. However, I’ve never shied away from writing on those topics, either – in stories like The Adversary, Two Wolves, Back from the Well, Damage etc – and stories like Hiding in Plain Sight and The First Collar, which have Tony being tortured and abused. I have never glamourised it in my fanfic stories, and it isn’t glamourised in Slavecatcher, either. Alex’s situation is in no way romanticised – the opposite I’d have said.

In Slavecatcher, the system of Indentured Servitude is a way of exploring what happens when societies go badly wrong and how easy acceptance of that can be in the name of a greater good. It’s also about how we create an ‘other’ and then mistreat them because they aren’t part of ‘us’, and how we all must take responsibility for that. I hope all of that has relevance and resonance in these novels.

In Slavecatcher, there is no abusive sex between the two main characters – one is a slave, and the other the ‘slavecatcher’ but they fall in love, and there are huge issues around consent and Alex’s ability to consent in the circumstances, which are fully discussed and explored. Josiah does not exploit or abuse Alex at any point – that’s very important to me.

Alex’s situation is pretty horrible, and Josiah has his own reasons for reacting to it and to Alex the way he does. As we find out more about both men, it becomes clear that neither of them is what they seem and both have some pretty huge ulterior motives for what they do and how they behave. You have to keep reading quite a long way to get to grips with what those motives might be, though! Whatever you think you know about them at the start, you can pretty much throw out of the window by the end! And they are both much nicer and more noble than we might initially think…

Non-con/torture is  an extreme form of angst and hurt/comfort, which I’ve always enjoyed exploring.  I also wanted the challenge of creating a form of modern slavery. To be honest, modern slavery exists in many forms all around us still, but I didn’t want to exploit the very real suffering of people in that situation by writing a romance novel about them. This is deliberately a futuristic, dystopian scenario that I hope has that ring of ‘but it could happen’.

Also, the system itself exists as an ‘antagonist’ in the form of obstacles to the love affair between Josiah and Alex, so that makes it interesting to write about as well. Alex’s fall from grace into ‘indentured servitude’ is very fully explored – a main theme of the novels is that of erosion – what parts of yourself you give away to protect yourself, or someone else, or because you don’t care or realise it might be important… and what the consequences of that might ultimately be. Is it better to bend or break under extreme stress – we see examples of both in the novels. Why a well meaning society might look the other way, and how attitudes can be paternal, or exploitative, or even positive, and how all can be inherent in the system, because at least one of the Indentured Servants in the book is very happy about how the IS system has helped her get an education and job. Others are much less fortunate.

It’s an extreme situation that drives an extreme narrative – I like writing that kind of ‘big’ story with drama and angst as you know. So, all of those were an attraction, too.

All that being said, there are some pretty edgy scenes in these novels, which won’t be for everyone.

I hope that answers the question a bit, but do let me know if not!

AW! It’s lovely you’re keeping the John/Rodney love alive over here! I’ve been so busy with work lately that I haven’t maintained discussions over here so it’s partly my fault nothing much is happening here. We’re also considering new forum software as this one is a bit buggy! I’d like to get some discussions going over here again but need work to calm down first!
I looked at that post and I can’t see the tear! I wish I could! I’ll try and rewatch that episode and see if I can see it. I can totally believe John IS crying though!

I had a conversation on my Facebook page recently about who I’d cast to play the character from Ricochet in a movie version of my novel (because yes, obviously it’s very likely that a movie will be made of my gay BDSM novel!). I also answered the question on the recent blog hop I participated in.

I must admit, I floundered a bit about who would play Rick and Matt. I didn’t really have a strong sense of any actor playing them when I was writing them. They felt very real to me in my head, but I didn’t have a physical avatar for them.

So I eventually decided that a slightly younger Patrick J Adams would be a perfect Matt…but was stumped with Rick. Then georgiesmith made me this (below) and it all fell into place! I have NO idea why I didn’t think of this perfect casting before! Anyway, I LOVE this pic and think they both look just right in the roles . That’s JUST how I see them (only Rick has longer hair *g*). Matt is completely spot on! Thanks SO much to Georgie. I love this!

I saw it on the big screen when I went to see Skyfall – and I think I was even more excited about that than the Bond movie, although Skyfall was great *g*.
It doesn’t appear to be opening in the UK until Jan 11th which I’m really miffed about out :-(

LOL! You can say “I told you so” about this! I’m happy to be proved wrong!

And yes, Little Miss J was NOT impressed at all by having a paperback shoved on top of her! Bless her outraged little heart!

I thought I should post these here for anyone who didn’t see them on my blog post! They’re Rick and Matt bears ;-)

There’s a story attached… McShepletgirl’s mum makes gorgeous little woollen bears, and when McShepletgirl was visiting her recently, she thought that one of the bears looked like Rick (darker skin, nose and eyes!) and one more like Matt. So she asked her mum if she could have them… and if her mum could embroider a spanked bottom to the Matt bear! Now, Mcshepletgirl’s mum is 80, but apparently she didn’t bat an eyelid, and was all about the technicality of how the spanked bottom should look! She’s a lady after my own heart!

Mcshepletgirl sent me the bears as a Ricochet present – she explained to me that the Rick bear isn’t wearing a shirt because the Matt bear borrowed it, and, of course, the Matt bear is wearing a collar and is on a leash! LOL! This gave me a real laugh when I got them through the post, so thanks so much to her.

As an addendum, my mum was visiting me last week and she saw the bears and picked them up and asked me where they’d come from. She loves handicrafts and knitting etc so she was interested in how they were made and who made them. I must admit I had to fudge that one a bit and I have no idea what she made of their special accessories and Matt bear’s spanked bum!

Oh yes! I LOVED the Tony/Abby scene – those two have such a sweet friendship and it’s absolutely CRIMINAL that the show has ignored it for so many years :-( . Especially when what they give us instead is Tiva dreck and that’s a pairing with zero chemistry .

They’ve been hinting at this with Gibbs for awhile – I just don’t understand what the signficance is! Or the whole “not a guest room anymore” thing – it’s like there are no bedrooms left in the house! What has he done? Turn them all into dungeons?! *g*.

I thought of Damage too re the Cold Cases! Hee! And I love the image of Tony curling up on Gibbs’s lap after a nice, hard spanking and a bout of hot, hard sex after *g*. That sub knows where he belongs! That’s why he keeps going there after work – he might not have completely moved in but he’s definitely sleeping there more often than not these days!
